Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

What is Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)?

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is aims to provide pain relief by stimulating the sensory nerves and modulating pain. It is an electrical stimulation which delivers through electrodes placed on the surface of your skin.

TENS electrodes are placed at or near nerves where the pain is located or at trigger points. TENS is a simple, non invasive analgesic technique that is used for the symptomatic management of acute and non malignant chronic pain.

What is Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy used to treat / Indication of Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)?

• Muscle spasms

• Radiating pain

• Painful diabetic neuropathy.

Postoperative pain

Conditions treated by Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)

• Low back pain

• localised muscle pain

• post-herpetic neuralgia,

• Trigeminal neuralgia

• Phantom limb

• Stump pain (hand & leg)

• Diabetic neuropathies (Hand & Leg)

• Entrapment neuropathies,

• Radiculopathies (cervical, thoracic and lumbar)

• Complex regional pain syndromes type I (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) and type II (causalgia)

How many Types of Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)?

• Conventional TENS (low-intensity, high-frequency)

• Acupuncture-like TENS (high-intensity, low-frequency)

• Intense TENS (high-intensity, high-frequency)

How Is Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) Perform?

There are two theories about how transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) works. One theory is that the electric current stimulates nerve cells that block the transmission of pain signals, modifying your perception of pain.

The second theory is that nerve stimulation raises the level of endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain-killing chemical. The endorphins then block the perception of pain.

Will I Feel Anything during Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)?

Some patients may feel a tingling, Prickling type sensation on skin. Don’t be surprised, however, if you feel nothing at all or feel it slightly; it is because of pain sensation that you might feel less current or sometimes no prickling sensation. TENS, however, should not be painful.

What is a Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) Dose?

TENS treatment will take from fifteen to thirty minutes, which depends on types of TENS and condition or problem of patient which will be decided by Physical therapist.

How does a Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) Work?

• Analgesic effect

• The pain gate theory

• Psychological block of nerve conduction

• Neural effects

Is Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) safe?

Yes, it is completely safe.
